NEW MUSIC LISTENING PROGRAM OFFERED TO AREA SCHOOLS
The WCO initiated a pilot program at MacLennan School in April and May in collaboration with principal Jean Bell and music teacher Judy Taylor. The Brummitt –Taylor Listening Program is organized to present one composer and one composition for each week. The composition is played daily. This means the featured composition of the week is heard five times during a regular school week. Familiarity provides the opportunity for the children to know and appreciate a composition. The WCO plans to introduce this five-year program into other area schools this fall.
Co-author David Brummitt and Vancouver Symphony concertmaster Cam Trowsdale visited Kendra Delano’s first grade class in May and spoke with teachers and students. About a million children are presently using this program.
Five minutes of classical music a day for five years will make a big difference .
